Funny. Well, what is preventing stores from adjusting the scales to say things weigh more while having an advertised price equal or lower to the competition? Have sealed scales that can not be adjusted. Oh, just realized that they probably have accurate digital scales at the check out and those large balances are used for estimations by the consumer. Why not have cheap, accurate digital scales with large platforms? I picked up an electronic balance that measures to the nearest ounce to 55 lbs for $22 shipped. Perhaps the scales were originally bought before cheap electronic ones were marketable. Perhaps these are just easier for people to use. You don't have to turn them on, change batteries or have them plugged in. they also can measure wet produce without messing up electronics. If the scales were sealed, employees could not calibrate them as spring scales can become less accurate
after prolonged use.
