TC told me about this couple that was living together, the the girl wanted to find a different place to stay because they were having "problems". Apparently when the guy talks about something that has little or not relevance to the girl, like modifying a Nerf gun, the girl is interested in the topic because the guy is interested in it. She likes seeing him excited. However, when the girl talks about something that has no relevance to the guy, such as which mascaras are clumpy this week but weren't last week, the guy can't stay interested. I am thinking, "Yikes. What if girls really are more noble/ considerate than guys. Does that mean that girls expect guys to do the same thing?" But I never thought about it. When talking to someone, do I stop as soon as they give non-verbal signs that they aren't interested, or do I finish the story anyway? But what should you talk about? If an engineer is married to a florist, the only real things they will have to talk about that day will be the new things that happened... which will likely be the things that happened that day. But what if the engineer only has stories about dealing with a circuit that has been delayed in shipment that is slowing down the design and the florist deals with a plant that isn't cross breeding like it was thought that it could. Should both give just a short sweet summary of what happened and then... watch something on TV so they can have a common interest? Should they give the long stories to each other risking boring the other person? SHould you pretend to be interested... risking zoning out and getting caught not paying attention and thereby disrespecting the other person that listed to your story with genuine interest... because YOU were the one telling the story?
