The Big Bang Theory Show Has Personally Relavent Scenes From My Life

The Big Bang Theory, episode 16: The Peanut Reaction has several true to life scenes from my life. For example the discourse about gift giving in the computer store and also helping people at a computer store. Good times.

Get a Free Incoming Fax Number Without a Phone Line or Fax Machine with E-Fax Free (that sends incoming faxes to your email)

http://www.efax.com/efax-free

E-Fax Free (not to be confused to the E-Fax Pro 30 Day Trial) allows you to receive 20 pages of incoming faxes each month for free. It will ask you to upgrade your account to a paid plan if you go over.

E-Fax Free assigns you a semi-random fax number (that will likely be from another state) that people can dial on their fax machines to fax you documents. They faxes will show up in the e-mail you register your account with.

I did not see any expiration time on the phone number, so for all I know, once you have a number assigned to an e-mail address, it stays active. Some other sites have the number time out if it not used for a certain length of time.

The free account does not allow for free outgoing faxes.

Test Incoming and Outgoing Faxes for Free

Test your fax machine

Send a one page black and white text fax to 1-888-hpfaxme (1-888-473-2963).
When your fax is received by the HP Test Fax Service, we will generate a return fax to you within five minutes confirming that we received your fax. This verifies that you can both send and receive a fax with your fax machine.

If you do not receive a return fax within 5-7 minutes, there may be a problem with the setup of your fax machine. Consult the user manual that came with the product for proper setup and configuration.

NOTE: The most common cause of failure is that the fax number set in the Fax Header on the machine does not match the number of the phone line connected to the fax. Also, ensure that the fax header contains the full 10-digit telephone number of the fax machine, including the area code.

What Programs to Install on Your Mac--Updated when possible

You have a new Mac. What programs should you choose to load and what order should you load them?

-CleanApp-
This App is designed to run in the background in order to properly and completely uninstall any programs you'll install. Haven't used it yet, but it makes sense.
http://www.syniumsoftware.com/cleanapp/

Other Operating Systems

-Boot Camp Partition-
Boot Camp Assistant can only partition the NTFS partition on the primary hard drive if there are no other partitions on your hard drive. So run Boot Camp Assistant before you make any other partitions.

TV Shows I may reference

An asterisk * means I'd recommend checking that show out.

Airwolf- Had a very similar feel to Knight Rider, except instead of a cool car that could do anything, it had a cool helicopter. I got my picture taken with a replica of this helicopter in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. People knew what I was talking about when I said Airwolf around them, even though I'd only stumbled across it after watching the A-Team on Hulu.

Andromeda-It was a B-level spaceship show similar to Star Trek, but delved less into deep thought, and had a cast that was supposed to appeal to non-nerds and geeks. Kevin Sorbo said he could have been Hercules and helped people in Greece or a star ship captain and helped people all over the universe.

A-Team- As serialized and predictable as it was, you have to know this show.

*Battlestar Galactia-(2004-2009 4 seasons) This space drama about humans from Caprica, one of 12 planets humans colonized on 4,000ish years ago, another planet being Earth. They had built robots called Cylons, who rebelled and left, but came back nuking the entire planet and some now take on human form with emotions, regret, defiance, etc. Only 41,000 human remain in a fleet of the space ships that were in orbit and weren't destroyed in the attack. They are guarded by a 40 year old Battlestar, a military ship, which is so old, it was scheduled to be decommissioned for scrap the day of the attack. It's is intense and explores deep questions and mixes it with excitement and action. It may be on par with Mad Men, but more intense. While Season 1 was kind of take it or leave it, towards the end of Season 2, it became something incredible and was worth watching the first season to fully experience. It explored everything from mixed loyalties, how to treat people and prisoners, viewing the same situation from different perspectives, sacrifice, political scandals, military vs government, poor friends you keep with you in leadership positions, etc.

I tried watching this out of order on TV 2004-2009 on occasion, and just couldn't get into it because it is a drama and you need to know what happened in the storyline to appreciate what's going on. The alternative at the time was Stargate SG-1 where the episodes could be watched out of order. So Stargate was a better fit before TV shows started showing up online.

It seemed to borrow some stuff from Space: Above and Beyond and a little from Farscape.

Burn Notice-A fun but cookie cutter spy show. The main character can be made fun of once you see a few episodes. Without it, my week feels like it is missing something.

Caprica-A new show that sets the premise for the successful Battlestar Galactica series. Sometimes ok, but it seems a bit overly critical of Christianity of times.

Cleopatra 2525-Kind of a B-level silly show with a Xena meets Power Rangers feel.

Eureka-It's ok.You have to watch things in order though.

*Farscape- (1999-2003) John Crichton is an astronaut who was experimenting with wormholes and got thrown across the galaxy and winds up on a living ship which had been taken over by a handful of escaped prisoners. Sometimes it gets a bit trippy, like an episode in cartoon format with a WB Roadrunner theme, but it was pretty good ride. A lot of people said it was cancelled prematurely.

*Firefly-Awesome show. I originally thought it was stupid when it aired on TV. I couldn't get over the faked Western accent in space. Later on when I watched the series from the beginning and learned about the Chinese/American influence and watched the pilot. Associated with the movie Serenity.

Hercules: The Legendary Adventures-Kevin Sorbo and Iolaus rock the B rated Greek Mythological world. It was kind of cute and funny when I saw it with Xena and the original Star Trek on SciFi when I got home from grade school.

House-It's so similar show to show. I still watch it though. It is just so serialized. It can make me laugh.

Human Target-Awesome show about a former assassin turned for-hire-bodyguard. I was sad when it got cancelled.

Jack of All Trades-This seems like Bruce Campbell's fun B-rated brain child. It was kind of fun. I enjoyed the theme song. "In 1801, the revolution had begun..." It used cheap jokes to make me laugh and I was cool with it.

Knight Rider-I saw episodes of the original one. It was fun. Oh, Kit. Saw the new one as well. It was kind of something to joke about.

*Lie to Me-Awesome show about an arrogant guy that can tell if people are lying. I was sad when it was cancelled.

*Mad Men- It's a drama about working in the advertising industry in New York in the 60s. Rarely is a New York accent heard. The Italian artist talks a bit flamboyantly for the time period. I speculate why he is doing that.

Episode 2x11 "The Jet Set" is an episode with a girl with wide eyes that just fill you with joy and happiness, enough to seduce Don Draper into not working for several days and I was just thinking, oh man, I have to experience that feeling. She's supposed to be 21, but she talks, makes eye contact, and just takes so much initiative it feels maturely surreal. I know, it is surreal. It's a TV show, but man. I don't know if I could lay by the beach just drinking and being seduced forever though. I'd want to do at least something each year, perhaps each month, that I can look back on and say, "I accomplished something this month" or accomplished something huge each year.

Merlin-Still contemplating this one.

Sliders-A SciFi show with a cool premise: what would the world be like if one thing changed... which caused another thing to change, etc. Awesome to reference.

Space: Above and Beyond-A futuristic world with a decent backstory that actually tries to get in the mind of a Marine soldier, albeit against aliens and rogue robot humans. Not particularly super fast pased all the time, but sometimes interesting.
This episode tracks a solo mission of a test tube soldier and the struggles he faces killing people, questioning authority, etc. 6/10 http://veehd.com/video/2785546_SPACE-ABOVE-BEYOND-S01E13

This episode deals with what it is like for a Marine to have his younger brother enlist under a battle hungry new commander that cares more about glory than the safety of his team. What do you do? Kind of makes you sad watching it. http://www.1channel.ch/tv-10998-Space-Above-and-Beyond/season-1-episode-17

*Stargate Atlantis-Very cool show. They had to retire the cast of Stargate SG-1. This was the transition show. Also pretty good.

*Stargate SG-1-I grew up watching this show on SciFi Friday. I would have liked it if they went into the scientific theory more, but Richard Dean Anderson wanted to keep things high level and entertaining instead of go into scientific theory in the show. Great premise though. Great actors.

Starhunter- For whatever reason, I saw the second season before the first. I loved the theme song of the second season and saved it to my phone. It was a B+ rated show. I liked the structure of the first season more, but I liked the second season a bit more. It was just fun.

The Invisible Man-This was one of my favorite sci-fi action shows growing up. The later episodes were less entertaining because all the protagonists knew they could use heat vision goggles or thermal cameras to see him. I wonder if I'd still like it.

The West Wing-(1999-2006) This series covers the life of a democratic US president and his advisory board as they go through tough situations. While the episodes are hit or miss in my opinion, they d can be watched out of order and the screen writers do have intelligent dialogue.

2-10 "Noel"-talks about PTSD -5/10 -"What I'm going to tell you will sound like 2+2 equals a bushel of apples but... music reminds you of the sirens. I'll recommend a therapist to you that you'll like. This is too easy for me. You will get better." ... a therapist says to

Three Moons Over Milford-The premise is what life would be like knowing each day could be our last. I didn't care for it much.
--The basic flaw with this theory is that people would be disincentivised from preparing themselves for the future events. Why would people go to school or work if today was their last day? There was a tad of reality interwoven into the 3rd? episode.

Jeremiah-The premise is what the world would be like if a massive majority of the adult population was wiped out by a virus. There were some interesting things, several innacuracies, but there was some deeper thought hidden in there. It was alright. Kind of like a Waterworld/Zombie Apocalypse feel without the zombies.

Xena: Warrior Princess-I watched this on the SciFi channel in grade school. When my mom asked what I had been doing, I'd say I was studying my Greek mythology since she hated it when I watched TV. I refused to believe rumors that Xena was a lesbian. there was an episode where she had a son (maybe through a centaur). Sure there was a bath scene with her and the blonde girl, Gabrielle, but hey, that was just to appease the GLBT audience in a way that was not offensive to straight people.

Groupon's guide to saying "No"

The Groupon Guide to: Saying "No"

As composer Alan Menken lyrically observed, "There are a million, billion wonderful ways to say no." What are some surefire ways to say "no" to unreasonable requests?

If a burdensome family member asks to crash at your place: "That would be fun—except all of my beds are infested with bedbugs. I'd offer the couch, but that thing is swarming with couchbugs, and the inflatable mattress is currently densely packed with—you guessed it—regular bugs. It's still pretty soft, though—your call!"

If a friend asks you to help move a couch: "I'd love to, truly. But the doctor says I shouldn't lift heavy things. Except for the heaviest thing of all—friendship. Except that being friends with you makes me feel lighter than air. Can I have a ride home?"

Original Lyrics to a tune

I heard a tune that was referenced in a show. It mad me think of another tune that was similar from when I was younger. I suddenly suddenly started singing about the gears in the table my mom and I cleaned out. We had to pull the two sides apart to pull out the expandable leaf.

As I sang, the tune was sorrowful but hopeful. The rest of the lyrics kind of fell into place within the next half hour.

The concept is that a therapist (or perhaps like the prophet that talked in symbols to Kind David) is talking to a parent about their problemed child. She was emotionally neglected, which can probably be easy to do as an adult with different priorities than a child. While I'd like to raise my child with my initial idea of quality time, I must realize that her idea of quality time will be different because she has not had the experiences I have. I am not talking about vacations to Hawaii, but rather, seeing what it is like to use all five of your senses in a forest. Watching people get bullied. Getting bullied. Stopping bullies. Seeing what things are almost vain to attempt, and which ones have merit. Wisdom is gained by exposure to things. You have to make sure children have exposure to things that can help them positively grow.

Here are the lyrics. Do lyrics to a tune make it a song?

Inspired by the
Here comes the moon? I recorded it. Maybe a Phillip Glass song

Look at this table with all of it’s features
It is expandable with several wide leafs
that lock into place at the turn of two levers
the gears sometimes stick if they’re not cleaned in years

Do. Do you know. How it feels
To be neglected
and just
like those gears
she’s unclean

Her emotions surround her.
with whimsical tales.
with dragons and ponies.
they never stop moving. --slow down-----
there’s some kind of turmoil
That’s never concluding

You
are the cause
of this fear
moving too swiftly to hear
her small voice
in the wind
asking some questions
of you

Stop
Tell me what
do you hear...

Louis Vaitton Wallet

I should clean my room more often. Kidding!

I may have received this as a gift but didn't think it was practical because it didn't have a zipper for a flash drive or coins. I didn't realize it was selling online for $395 new. The leather is nice and durable. It just isn't practical to carry a flash drive, coins, etc.

Steak and Shake fraud

Yeah. They take away the menu not only for new people, but so you don't complain that there is not as much guacamole on your burger as there was on the burger in the menu. Who controls false advertising like that?

Windows Fan Control Speedfan 4.42

Have a raging fan on a PC? Speed Fan may be able to help.

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Recommended Mac OSX Apps and programs Jan. 2011

You know the big ones. Here are some other mentionable ones.

Adobe Acrobat Pro-paid- Lets you do advanced things with scanning, OCR, combining PDFs, highlighting, takingnotes on PDFs, etc.

Alarm Clock-Free. Simple. And simply awesome! Lets you set schedules for waking you up with music from iTunes. Will also wake from sleep if you go into preferences and type in your password. Great for recurring alarms.

Audacity- An audio program that's a lot more basic than Garageband. It's good for splicing songs, making ring tones, recording audio files, etc. You'll want to install the Lame mp3 codec if you want to export to mp3. It's easy to learn.

Audio Hijack Pro-paid- Awesome if you want to control the volume from different apps separately, mute programs, or even increase the volume past the normal capability of your Mac. For example, you can watch a TV episode online with the Firefox 3 based version of Flock, and boost the volume past the normal levels. Especially if you insert a Double Gain effect and crank the dials right. You can also hijack a program and inset the 10-Band EQ effect. This will give you control over the bass and treble. I believe it can be used with Safari 32 bit, DVD Player, iChat, Skype, WebEx Meeting Center, etc. You can run two hyjacked apps seperately and have them playing at different noise levels if they can't easily be controlled within their own program. Does not work on certain 64 bit programs that don't have a 32 bit version they can resort to. For example, the 64 bit of Safari will shut down and a compatible 32 bit version will start up. Google Chrome and the Stainless browsers aren't compatible at all.

Chrome- I am hesitant to recommend it. It has a fast load up time. It is still not completely compatable with some sites. If the flash/shockwave plug in crashes, the entire browser needs to be restarted. Not cool.

Cyberduck- If you manage a website, this is a good FTP client to upload pictures and such to.

DivX-Lets you play DivX movies in your browsers.

FanControl- If you are having fan issues on your mac, Fan Control may be able to help. It tells you the speed of the fan and lets an advanced user set different fan speeds for different temperature levels. No matter what you (safely) do, you will get fan noise with your fan maxing out around 6200 rpm when you watch flash movies online. My temperature is 176 Fahrenheit and 80 Celsius after watching movies online for a while. If your fan stops working, your computer will automatically turn off when it gets too hot. I opened up the macbook and reattached the fan cable as well as clean out the dust from the fan and make sure it could spin freely. It had a bit of resistance to it, so I cleaned it out which freed it up. http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/index.html

Flip4Mac-lets you play windows video files in your web browser. I think AVI or wmv.

Fluid Web Browser-This is a site specific browser. It will always stay on one page and open links in a different browser. It can bee good for something like a google calendar. You can also set up transparency and a dock icon. http://fluidapp.com/

Firefox-This is a pretty nice browser. It is highly customizable. It can hang on flash games at times.

Firefox Beta-A bit ahead of its time, and not in a good way... yet. Will hang at times when watching video and become unresponsive. Has potential, but has problems right now with survey popups and problems syncing with its own user server to store

Flock-I use the Firefox based Flock instead of the Chrome based one. I've found it a bit more stable than the newer Firefox and Chrome for flash games. It may be a tad slower than some newer browsers, but it makes up for that with a tad bit better stability. It doesn't have a "View Full Screen" feature for my external monitor like other browsers. The social media sidebars are sometimes nice, but I generally have them hidden. No harm done.

Get Lyrical-Displays lyrics and searches for the lyrics online to display them

Growl-I don't recommend it yet. It seems more annoying than productive. It gives you updates on things that go on with your computer.

GimmeSomeTune-Lets you view the lyrics stored in iTunes (sometimes it can find the lyrics online) in a small window as a song is playing. (Get Lyrical may be better)

iPartition-paid-... maybe?

MPEG Streamclip - Lets you easily convert video files.

NeoOffice- This is probably the most full-featured free replacement for Microsoft Office available for Mac OSX. (It is www.openoffice.org, that was made for Windows, tuned up for Mac. ) http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php

NTFS for Mac OSX- Lets you read AND write to windows drives. http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26288/ntfs-for-mac-os-x

OmniDiskSweeper - Can help you find large files on your computer.

Onyx- Also can help you find large files on your computer.

Opera Web Browser- May take a bit getting used to, but not bad. Only does Full Screen on your primary monitor. Good for sharing large files between another person with Opera. Works with Audio Hijack without restarting.

Parallels -paid- Lets you run Windows, Linux, and other operating systems on your computer while also running OSX at the same time. Both systems will run a tad slower than usual. Sometimes it's nice though. Similar to VMWare.

PDANet - combine this with a phone/PDA/Android/Windows mobile that has thePDANet app, and you can get free tethering... unless your plan monitors your data usage. Sprint does rock in this aspect.

PTH Pasteboard - keeps a list of the last 100 or so things you copy so you can paste as need. The Pro version is paid. I have version 4.3.2. http://pth.com/products/pthpasteboard/release-notes/ 4.4.1 is the last free version.

Shift It- Similar to Windows' Aero Snap, but with keyboard shortcuts. May have issues with dual monitors.

SuperDuper-paid for increased functionality- I like this backup program a tad better than the default Time Machine. You can actually keep a live working bootable clone of your mac hard drive on an external drive and run it through a USB or Firewire connection. The files are searchable from another mac/Windows computer with MacDrive 8 (paid) or maybe a these free things http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/ and http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/.

TeamViewer-Lets someone take remote control of your computer to fix issues. Free for non-commercial use.

TextExpander-(paid)- will let you save shortcuts for paragraphs or the current date. So you can type "ddate" and "January 13, 2011" will show up. Or you can type "newc" and a pre-written paragraph you have for a new customer will show up.

TextWrangler-A text based app on steroids. You can select vertically instead of just horizontally and cool things like that. Good for note taking on a local computer.

Transmission- Lightweight app for downloading torrents.

UnRarX- I think this one lets you unpackage seperated .rar files into one original file.

VLC player-Plays most media other players can not.

VMware Fusion-paid-Runs Windows, linux, etc simultaneously as OSX. I haven't picked this over Parallels yet... or Vice versa. Sussposedly VMware has more business potential and Parallels caters to the home user interested only in running two operating systems at once.

Test Web Browser SPeed with sunspider

What web browser is the fastest? Find out for yourself. Open this URL in the browsers you want a score from.

http://www2.webkit.org/perf/sunspider-0.9.1/sunspider-0.9.1/driver.html

Opera came in in the 500s, Chrome in the 800s, Safari in the 1000s. It may change.

Opera's test went really slow when another window was playing a flash movie.

Cost of owning various cars

This is a pretty awesome cost of ownership calculator people should look at before buying a car.

New cars generally cost more to own because of the faster rate of depreciation and higher insurance rates due to the higher insured value with these calculations.

What I noticed

Audi - $2,000 each year for repairs and maintenance. Costs about two times more than Volkswagon Jetta/Honda Civic etc. to repair and maintain.

BMW- $3,000 each year on maintenance.

Buick- $1,000 each year on maintenance. Similar in cost to a Honda Civic, except a bit more for gas milage

Civic- $

Jaguar- High repair cost
